CMS issued updates to the MDS 3.0 manual on September 20, 2011.

CMS Releases Memo Regarding Overuse of Dashes When Completing MDS 3.0 Assessments: CMS is asking providers to take steps now to immediately correct inappropriate coding of dashes. Inappropriate use of dashes has implications for the accuracy of quality measures and for communicating resident status at discharge to support coordination and continuity of care.

Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) On-Time Quality Improvement Program Manual: The On-Time Quality Improvement program is a practical approach to quality improvement (QI) in long-term care, embedding QI strategies and best practices into health information technology. This manual is an introduction to the On-Time QI approach. While pressure ulcer prevention is the initial clinical area of focus, AHRQ will be applying this approach to other clinical areas such as falls prevention and management and prevention of inpatient hospital transfers.

CMS Releases Information On Nursing Home QAPI Initiatives: CMS recently released a survey and certification memorandum outlining the Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement (QAPI) initiatives mandated by the Affordable Care Act (ACA). Section 6102 of the ACA requires CMS to establish and implement a QAPI program for nursing homes and provide technical assistance to homes on the development of best practices in order to meet such standards.
